Engineering Manager Nature of Work

Engineering managers plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the activities of an engineering department, service or firm. They are employed by a wide range of private sector and government establishments and by consulting engineering and scientific research companies.

Engineering Managers Work Conditions

Highly experienced engineers, from any engineering discipline, may progress to management positions. Although engineering managers may spend many hours in the office, they are also required to spend time on site supervising progress.

Engineering Managers Employment Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in engineering or a college diploma in engineering
• Extensive experience in an engineering discipline, including supervisory experience
• Registration as a Professional Engineer is usually required

Engineering Manager Duties and Tasks

Engineering managers may perform the following tasks:

• contribute to research and development projects
• coordinate the activities of engineering staff and control engineering staff selection and training
• direct the formulation of engineering strategies, policies and plans
• interpret plans, drawings and specifications and provide advice on engineering methods and procedures to achieve construction and production requirements
• make sure engineering standards of quality, cost, safety, timeliness and performance are met
• make sure that there is conformity with specifications and plans and with laws, regulations and safety standards
• oversee maintenance requirements to optimize efficiency
• talk to marketing, research and manufacturing managers concerning engineering aspects of new construction and product design
• work out and put into place project and work schedules and budgets
