Bank Clerks Nature of Work

Bank clerks receive and pay out money and assist customers with loans, foreign currency and investments. Bank clerks are usually rotated to different positions during their careers to broaden their experience and develop their skills. Banking clerks compile, process and maintain banking, insurance and other financial information.

Bank Clerks Work Conditions

Most bank clerks work in a branch network where customers are mainly individuals and local businesses. Bank clerks can request transfers to work in other branches and departments.

• Completion of secondary school
• A business college diploma may be required

Bank Clerks Duties and Tasks

A bank clerks may perform the following tasks:

• identify customer needs and refers them to appropriate banking services
• accept money or checks deposited by customers, verifies records and receipts, and credits customers' accounts
• pay money to customers according to advice slips, checks or negotiable documents, and debits customers' accounts
• assess the viability and credit risk of business and consumer loan proposals
• conduct foreign currency transactions for overseas travelers
• provide change and cashes checks
• record transactions
• balance cash and advise supervisors of cash position or discrepancies
• answer customer inquiries
• open and close accounts for customers
